The Adventures were an Irish band from Belfast whose second
album just barely scratched the Billboard 200, peaking at #144 in 1988. The
lead single, “Broken Land”, stalled at #95 in the US but became the most played
record on BBC Radio 1 that year.
“Broken Land” is an epic pop song with keyboards and guitars
blending perfectly to create a lofty atmosphere for the uilleann pipes (see
below). The lyrics about coming of age in a world filled with insanity and
heartbreak are still applicable today. Another wonderful song from this
terrific album is the title track:
If you like 80s bands like Simple Minds, INXS, and Tears for
Fears, be sure to check out this one from The Adventures – it is great from
start to finish.
In case you were wondering, these are what uilleann (Gaelic for “elbow”) pipes look like. |
