Sixpence None The Richer formed in the early 90s and struck chart gold with the delightfully perky tune "Kiss Me" from 1999. Receiving additional exposure in the movie She's All That, the song shot all the way to #2. The band managed two more chart appearances with cover tunes: their version of "There She Goes," originally by The La's, went to #32 in 1999 and "Don't Dream It's Over," originally by Crowded House, went to #78 in 2003. The latter came from their 2002 record called "Divine Discontent." It is surprising it didn't put the band back in the Top 40 with great cuts like "Waiting On The Sun" and this one, "Tonight."
The La's (a slang term for lads) were an indie rock band from Liverpool, England who are best known for their crossover hit, "There She Goes," which peaked at #49 in 1991. One of the most infectious little tunes ever made, it has been covered by a number of other bands. Sixpence None The Richer took their version to #32 in 1999. The song comes from their self-titled 1990 record, which remains the band's only studio release. The La's were critically acclaimed for their songwriting gifts and retro sound, but none of the other songs gained traction in the US. The reasons are baffling, since tunes like "I Can't Sleep" and "I.O.U." are brilliant. Shortly after achieving their chart success, the broke went on hiatus and has not released any new studio recordings. Bassist and backing vocalist John Powers went on to form another band heavily influenced by the British bands of the 60s, called Cast.
Liverpool band The La's are best known for their hit, "There She Goes", which went to #49 on the US singles chart in 1990. It has since been covered by many others, perhaps most successfully by the Sixpence None The Richer, who took the song to #32 in 1999. Bassist and backing vocalist John Power left The La's to form a new band called Cast in 1992. Similar to much of the material done by The La's, Power pulled out all the stops to make Cast sound like an authentic 60s rock band. Their debut album, "All Change" arrived in 1995 amidst a number of others constituting the Brit-pop wave like Oasis and The Verve. Cast performed very well in the UK, but unlike their counterparts, didn't make it in the States. With songs like "Alright", it is hard to figure out why.
