"Everything Keeps Coming Up You" is a highlight from "The Upside Of Down" that represents some of the ear candy both of Bertrand's bands were capable of creating.

"Everything Keeps Coming Up You" by The Tories
The Tories were a terrific power pop band led by Steve Bertrand that flew under the radar at the turn of the century. During their time, they released two records, "Wonderful Life" in 1997 and "The Upside Of Down" in 2001. After the band's demise, Bertrand formed Avion, which included some Tories songs on their one and only release.

"Eighty-eight" by James Guffee
Formerly with cult powerpop band, The Tories, James Guffee released his one and only solo record in 2005, entitled "So Much For Secrets." It is a shame more of the world does not know his musical talents. Just as melodious as his work in The Tories, Guffee's solo effort is filled with memorable tunes that stick with you long after the record is played. His evolution as a songwriter grew by leaps and bounds and I would love to visit a parallel universe where he released more material.
You don't hear too many thoughtful tributes to grandparents, but "Eighty-eight" is a terrific one. Other highlights include "The Hardest Part" and "One More Time."

"Beautiful" by Avion
There is a rather confusing history behind the pop rock band called Avion. Avion emerged from the ashes of a band called The Tories, and the common thread here is the talented singer and songwriter Steve Bertrand. Some of the songs from The Tories also appear on this lone release from Avion.
This is a brilliant, nearly flawless record from start to finish - I don't know how in the world it got overlooked. Filled with catchy, hard-edged pop songs and gorgeous ballads, Avion should have taken the country by storm. My favorite track is "Beautiful" - check it out.

The self-titled record from Avion was released in 2004. |
